The episode breakdown
A battle that cannot settle the family
The fighting gives brotherhood a literal battlefield, but surrender cannot return the family to its earlier condition. Ragnar's willingness to spare Rollo is not the same as repairing the damage Rollo has done to their companions. Read the episode as a disagreement over what kinship permits: does family require mercy even when other loyalties have been violated?
Lagertha's decision belongs to Lagertha
The marriage crisis is not simply a logistical question about accommodating Aslaug. Ragnar proposes an arrangement, and Lagertha rejects the terms on which it would require her to live. Her departure makes refusal an active choice. Bjorn's decision to go with her adds another independent judgment inside a household that Ragnar can no longer assume he controls.
What the premiere changes
Two kinds of forgiveness are placed side by side. Ragnar can intervene in Rollo's political fate, but he cannot command his wife to accept a new domestic order. That difference is the episode's useful organizing idea. Watch where Ragnar can deploy influence and where an appeal fails. The result is a season opening built from consequences rather than a reset: the prior finale's choices become enduring fractures in the people who made them.
