Taking the earldom

Left in a position of responsibility while Lagertha travels, Kalf helps organize her displacement and becomes earl. Ragnar accepts him as an ally for the Frankish expedition despite her anger, placing military usefulness above the immediate resolution of her grievance.

Shared rule without security

Kalf restores Lagertha as co-ruler and eliminates opponents of that arrangement. He also participates in the plan to send a berserker after Bjorn. When Lagertha reveals her pregnancy, they arrange a wedding; she kills him before the marriage is completed and claims sole rule.

Intimacy is not an amnesty

The official premise combines cunning ambition with attraction to Lagertha. That combination matters: affection can be present without settling the conflict through which the relationship formed. Read the promise of a common household beside their competing histories of power, rather than assuming that one cancels the other.

Memorable scenes

Shared rule enforced with crossbows

Season 4, episode 1

Kalf announces that he and Lagertha will rule Hedeby together. Opposition becomes a trap in which dissenters are killed. The apparent restoration of partnership depends on removing the people who expected him to exclude her.

Why this moment matters

The announcement presents the return of partnership, but the mechanism securing it is a purge. Kalf’s apparent willingness to share power therefore also demonstrates how far he will go to control the terms of sharing. The scene turns a political compromise into a warning: being restored to authority beside him does not make Lagertha independent of his calculation.

The wedding that restores one ruler

Season 4, episode 5

After the pregnancy and marriage proposal, Lagertha kills Kalf before their marriage is completed and declares herself sole ruler. The scene demonstrates that intimacy has not canceled the history of his displacement of her.

Why this moment matters

The wedding is organized as a public promise of a common future, making its reversal an especially forceful claim over the unresolved past. Lagertha does not allow romance or pregnancy to settle the matter of the earldom. Kalf’s death exposes the danger of mistaking continued intimacy for proof that the original displacement has been forgiven.

Why fans keep talking

Kalf offers an interesting test of how far political pragmatism can explain conduct without excusing it. Sharing rule and joining a profitable expedition suggest flexibility, but involvement in the attempt on Bjorn appears to risk the advantages he has secured. That is where admiration for cunning becomes doubt about overreach. His relationship with Lagertha keeps the contradiction personal: genuine attraction can coexist with a threat to the person’s authority and family. The wedding does not solve the puzzle of his motives; it reveals how costly his confidence in reconciliation has become.

What resonates

Ambition and pragmatism make his political maneuvering interesting to some viewers, while others enjoy the performance and the secondary storyline on their own terms.

What divides viewers

His alliance with Einar makes him difficult to like. The attempt on Bjorn also raises questions about the judgment behind his schemes.
