Key events and consequences
Ivar's rejection of peace makes the fighting follow an identifiable failed alternative. Lagertha's advantage does not settle the contest, and saving Heahmund leaves open a relationship the opposing side believes has ended in death. Iceland's disputes expose another community unable to avoid conflict merely by wishing for a different beginning.

Key characters
Locations and story geography
Kattegat
The struggle over the town's rule produces a battlefield advantage without a final political settlement.
Iceland
Early disagreements test the premise that the settlers can leave the old patterns behind.

The episode breakdown
The title draws attention to the unstable space between sincerity and provocation. Peace can be proposed and then withdrawn, while an apparently dead enemy can become someone worth saving. The first battle should therefore be read as a change in relationships as well as a tactical result. Compare the conflict in Kattegat with the disputes among settlers: moving away from an old center of power has not removed the habits that turn disagreement into a contest over authority.
