The episode breakdown
Departures that do not resemble triumph
Ivar encourages Igor through the final confrontation with Oleg, but does not remain to build a life with Katia. Hvitserk recognizes a change in his brother. The struggle over Kjetill’s whale erupts, forcing Ubbe and Torvi to escape without a secure destination. In Kattegat, Ingrid’s past connection to Erik as a slave trader becomes clear. During the marriage proceedings, Gunnhild enters the water and dies rather than accepting life beside Harald.
Leaving power behind
every departure asks whether continuing to live under an available arrangement is acceptable. These are different choices with different costs, and they should not be flattened into one triumphant lesson. In particular, Gunnhild’s death is a tragic character outcome rather than a model of liberation. Compare the futures characters can imagine with the practical options their circumstances leave open. Katia’s statement about her pregnancy is a character’s report, not an independently demonstrated future lineage. The scene closes a relationship without showing every consequence that the departing characters imagine.
